Phoenix, West’s top seed, to host Western Conference Finals game on Sept. 1

PHOENIX – The Phoenix Mercury and the WNBA today announced the team’s schedule for the 2007 Western Conference Finals. The Mercury will face the San Antonio Silver Stars, who finished with the conference’s second-best record and clinched their opening round series against the Sacramento Monarchs on Monday night.

As the higher seed in the best-of-three, 1-2 format, the regular season Western Conference champion and top-seeded Mercury begin the conference finals on the road visiting the lower-seeded team on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. local Phoenix time. The first home conference finals game in Mercury history will be played on Saturday, Sept. 1 at US Airways Center at 4 p.m.

Phoenix earned the second playoff series win in franchise history and the team’s first series sweep all-time with a 2-0 victory over the Seattle Storm, clinched at home on Sunday, Aug. 26 with a 95-89 victory. The Mercury earned a berth in the Western Conference Finals for the first time in franchise history (1998 Finals berth came before current conference bracket format).

All three games of the conference finals will be televised, with Thursday’s game carried on ESPN Classic, Saturday’s on NBATV and Sunday’s (if necessary) on ESPN2.

Tickets for Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals at US Airways Center went on sale this morning, Tuesday, Aug. 28, at 10 a.m. and can be purchased on phoenixmercury.com.
